City of Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton recently issued a statement on the potential Pilgrim’s Pride rendering plant project.
“I publicly want to thank our state and federal officials, as well as Pilgrim’s Pride, for considering Gadsden as the location for a $75 million-dollar industrial facility. The proposed project is the largest new capital expenditure project our state has attracted in the past year. In fact, it is one of the largest proposed developments statewide in the past three years. The potential economic impact is significant, including jobs that pay well for our citizens and revenue for our schools.
“However, I am well aware of the historical reputations associated with rendering plants. Although I am not yet sure whether this new general poultry rendering plant is right for Gadsden, I remain committed to give this industry – as well as any and all future industries – a fair opportunity for consideration.
“I am always grateful for community concern over any issue which affects our citizens. The concerns which have been expressed over the proposed rendering plant have not fallen on deaf ears. However, we must be fair in our consideration and refrain from rash reactions to internet misinformation.
“I want the citizens of Gadsden to know that their elected officials will continue to investigate this proposed project in order to determine, based on true facts and evidence, whether the proposed project is good for Gadsden as well as our neighboring communities. I would encourage everyone to tone down the divisive rhetoric so that we can evaluate the potential project in a more constructive manner.”
