Panthers, Blue Devils notch big region wins

Southside ended a decades-long losing streak to Oxford with a 34-31 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Class 6A, Region 7 action on September 10 at Oxford.
The Panthers (3-1, 2-0) had not beaten Oxford since the 1980 season, a string of 13 games.
For Southside, Gauge Nesmith completed 11 of 19 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns. Daimon Hitchcock had four receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns, while Cody Roberts caught three passes for 89 yards and two scores. Tyler Green rushed for 51yards on 18 carries.
Tytan Rich finished with 15 tackles, followed by Jacob Davis with 14, Ethan Light with nine, Koal Garrett and John Gilbert with eight each, Spencer Sharp (pictured above) with seven and Carson Riddlespur with six. Glibert had two sacks, while Garrett and Light each had an interception.
The Panthers continue region play at home this Friday (Sept. 17) against Arab.

Etowah ran its region winning streak to 27 games with a 49-22 victory over Fultondale on September 10 in Attalla.
For the Blue Devils (2-1, 2-0), Briggs Freeman rushed 20 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrew Pierce added 33 yards on six attempts.
Trace Thompson was 6 for 11 in passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Omareon Finch caught two passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Etowah visits region rival Ashville this Friday (Sept. 17).
