Michael Holt, a psychology student at Gadsden State Community College, was recently awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Hites Transfer Scholarship for $7,500 made possible by support from the Hites Family Community College Scholarship Foundation and the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.

The scholarship rewards outstanding academic achievement of Phi Theta Kappa members.

These scholarships are awarded annually to 10 members enrolled in associate degree programs who are eligible to transfer to regionally accredited four-year institutions.

A native of Rainbow City, Holt began classes at GSCC while in high school by taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment Program and has maintained a perfect grade point average since enrolling.

Additionally, he has received such honors as the 2013 Allen-Ray Award and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver scholarship.

Holt is also a member of the college’s choir, Phi Theta Kappa, and serves as the International Student Events Coordinator.

He hopes to someday work as a counselor for the Peace Corps, a desire that was increased following a semester abroad in Varanasi, India during the fall of 2011.

He was able to travel to India as a part of a Christian service program called Fusion.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States and additional chapters abroad.
