Jackets, Warriors set to do battle

Westbrook at Glencoe
2012 result: Westbrook 12, Glencoe 7
Series record: Glencoe 4, Westbrook 1

By Gene Stanley/Sports Correspondent

While Glencoe High is in a rebuilding year, Westbrook’s football team simply reloaded. Or so it seems to Yellow Jackets coach Lee Ozmint.

“They’re very athletic all over the field,” Ozmint said. “They’ve especially got a great backfield.”

This year’s quarterback – senior Jake Kilgo – was a running back for the Warriors last season. But don’t expect a dropoff at the position.

“He’s an excellent athlete who has the ability to play anywhere on the field,” Ozmint said.

Ozmint went on to mention running backs Francisco Lopez (who missed last year with injury), Randy Williams, Brian Welch and Dalvin Lewis.

“And they’re big and physical upfront,” Ozmint said. “They’re going to be every bit as good as last year.”

In 2012, Westbrook went 7-4 and lost their first round playoff game at Red Bay by only a 14-7 margin.

Glencoe lost a good deal of its team from a year ago, but Westbrook coach Tony Osborne is still concerned.

“They look a lot like last year,” he said. “I expect a hard fought, low-scoring game – if we can do our part, that is.”

Osborne sees a quicker Glencoe team and specifically mentioned junior running back Thomas Ozmint.

“He’s a really good one. He has the speed and the instincts to be a great one.”

Both coaches felt their teams looked fairly ready during last week’s jamborees and both worked on specific areas this week.

“We’re mainly tweaking a few things,” Osborne said. “We’re trying to get ready by Friday.”

Ozmint said, “We had trouble lining up on defense. They’re still learning why to do certain things, not how.

“Westbrook beat us last year – enough said.”
