Anonymous donors offer tasty way to raise money

By Donna Thornton/News Editor
An anonymous donor whose family has been touched by childhood cancer came up with a unique way to make a donation for research into childhood cancer at Emory University.
This donor pledged that for each gold Frios pop sold by the downtown Gadsden treat shop during the month of September, she would donate 50 cents. Gold is the color for the childhood cancer campaign; September is awarenss month.
Her promise paid off: soon after she made her pledge, another Frios customer stepped up and offered to donate 50 cents as well, Frios co-owner Andy Harp said.
So for every gold pop – Yellowhammers or Screaming Eagles — a $1 donation will go to research into cancers that affect children. The initial donor said she didn’t want to be publicly identified.
“I just want to do something to help,” she said “Everybody should want to do that.”
Harp said the two flavors of freshly made pops that will add to the donations are both Frios tributes to beverages popular in the hometowns of the University of Alabama and Auburn University respectively.
The Yellowhammer has fresh pureed pineapple, fresh squeezed orange juice, organic sweetener and a touch of almond oil to give it an Amaretto flavor, Harp said.
The Screaming Eagle is patterned after some of the popular lemonades, he said. It’s made of orangeade, fresh orange zest, lemon juice and organic sweetner.
As of Sept. 4, Frios has sold 113 gold pops. On First Friday, Harp said he plans to take the Frios cart out on the street, selling just those two flavors of pops. Other flavors will be available in the store.
