Gadsden State Community College recently announce that three athletic teams earned honors for their work in the classroom in qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Association Academic teams for the 2013-2014 school year.
To qualify as an academic team, athletic teams must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
The GSCC men’s tennis team earned a cumulative 3.38 grade point average, followed by women’s volleyball at 3.33 and women’s softball at 3.16.
Coaches for the teams are Buster Stewart (tennis), Connie Clark (volleyball) and Jeanne Kerr (softball).
In addition to the team honors, Cardinal tennis player Trois White of Boaz received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence with a 4.0 GPA.
Amy Estes of Jacksonville (volleyball), Jacob Mitchell of Rome, Ga. (tennis), Collin Nichols of Huntsville (volleyball), and Rebecca Samples of Lafayette (softball) received the Superior Academic Achievement Award with GPAs of 3.80 or higher.
Taylor Adams of Scottsboro (women’s basketball) and Megan Butler of Huntsville (volleyball) received the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award with GPAs of 3.65 or higher.
“We are extremely proud of our student athletes for their hard work in the classroom and athletic venues,” said GSCC Athletic Director Mike Cancilla. “It is indeed an honor to have three of our programs recognized nationally for their academic achievements.”
