Dorothea Dupree

By Lindsay Seagraves/News Editor

The Central-Carver Legacy museum at the Carver Community Center opened its doors to the public after about ten years of planning on Wednesday, July 2.

The museum, dedicated to Gadsden’s first African American 12-year public school, is housed inside part of the old Carver High School, which closed in 1971 because of integration.

Mistress of the ceremonies was Ms. Edna M. Cole. and soloist was Dorothea Dupree. Speakers included  Rev. F. Huff, Taylor Knowles, Willie Sutton of Carver Atlanta Alumni Chapter, Central Carver Reunion Chairlady Sherry DeRamus, Central Carver Foundation Chairlady Kathryn Barrett, Founder and Executive Director of Central Carver Legacy Museum Bettye Jean Knowles and Vice Chairman of Central Carver Foundation Claude Burnett.

Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton, Rep. Craig Ford and Rep. Becky Nordgren attended the grand opening.
