The FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) Club at Gadsden City High School recently sponsored a breast cancer awareness program for junior and senior girls.
The goal of the program was to raise awareness about this dreaded disease that will affect one out of every eight persons in the country.
The importance of monthly self -exams and early detection were the emphasis of the program.
For young women, self-breast exams are recommended to check for the disease. At 35, women are recommended to begin getting yearly mammograms. Early detection is key to treatment. If caught early, chances of the breast cancer being fatal is drastically reduced.
Mary Hagar and Tara Fulford of Advanced Imaging of Gadsden gave the presentation to the students. They are also the founders of the local non-profit organization Never Surrender.
Never Surrender assists women who need a mammogram but cannot afford one to receive one at no cost. They also help diagnosed women pay for treatment if they are unable to.
Never Surrender is currently taking submissions for Bras with a Cause, their major fundraiser, which features decorated bras that are auctioned and used to make a calendar.
