Female students with high potential in Gadsden City middle schools had a fun time learning how to make simple burglar alarms
Alabama Power kicked off the iCan program for this school year.
Gadsden Middle, Emma Sansom Middle and Litchfield Middle schools participated in the program.
The students will participate in three projects during the school year.
The first exercise, this week, was based on electrical engineering, where the participants created a burglar alarm.
The second activity is tied closely to civil engineering and the third project will be based on mechanical engineering.
The Alabama Power program is helping expose female middle school students to the field of engineering through hands-on training exercises.
It’s an exceptional program because it exposes young girls to all aspects of engineering.
Participants are about 20 girls that were chosen by their math and science teachers as “high potential” to participate three times during the school year.
There are still a lot less women in math and science related fields, including engineering.
The program hopes to support and encourage potential future scientists and engineers.
