Area runners compete in season-opening 5Ks

A number of local runners finished in the top 20 at recent high school cross county meets.
At the Wildcat Twilight Invitational on Thursday, Aug. 22 in Anniston, Glencoe’s Sarah Ponder (22:20.18) finished third and Emma Godfrey placed eighth (23:22.06) out of a field of 67 runners. Hokes Bluff’s Ethan Patterson (18:15.51) came in fourth in the boys’ race.
At the Pisgah Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 24, the West End girls placed third out of 21 teams. Karlee Tarpley (pictured above) paced the Lady Patriots with a seventh-place time of 24:29.89. She was followed by Kennedi Nix (24:47.81) in ninth place. Following up for West End were Carolina Rainey (16th, 26:11.14), Emma Franklin (17th, 26:20.16) and Tensley Young (20th, 26:30.55). Jarrin Vaughn (13th, 21:00.82) and Justin Smith (14th, 21:01.61) were the top performers for the boys.
A fourth-place finish (21:56.46) by Allie Cone helped the Ashville girls place third out of 15 teams at the Bullfrog Pond Classic on Saturday, Aug. 24 in Odenville. Avery Whiteman (24:24.14) ended up in 12th place, followed by Anzlee Farmer (25:59.94) in 17th place.
In the boys’ 5K, Westbrook Christian’s Luke Pilotte (18:28.85) finished seventh, while Ashville’s Coby Caswell (19:13.94) and Drew Gargone (19:48.94) came in 15th and 19th, respectively.
