Boys basketball roundup: Scissum helps Etowah post big area win

Etowah outscored Ashville 32 to 10 in the second half en route to a 54-41 victory in Class 4A Area 12 action on Jan. 9 in Attalla. Jameson Scissum (pictured above) paced the Blue Devils (14-6) with 16 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Jalien Walker finished with nine points and six boards. Lamont Richardson and Jacob Turner each chipped in eight points, with the former grabbed nine rebounds and the latter collecting four rebounds, three assists and three steals. For the Bulldogs (12-8), Parker Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds, J.B. Potter had 11 points and nine rebounds, Nate Huckbay had nine points and Dalton Rice-Thompson had five points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sardis remained undefeated in Class 5A Area 12 with a 63-36 victory over Douglas on Tuesday, Jan 9 in Sardis City. The Lions (18-2, 5-0) led 14-13 after one period, 32-21 at halftime and 45-24 after three quarters. For Sardis, Luke Martin finished with 20 points and five assists, while
Kason Moore had 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Carson Gillilan contributed 10 points, 10 rebound and two steals, while Eli Morton collected nine points and five rebounds. Lucas Montgomery chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Wade Segrest’s buzzer-beating layup propelled Glencoe to a 62-60 victory over B.B. Comer on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Aiden Cornutt paced the Yellow Jackets (11-5) with 32 points, followed by Garrett Morgan with 13 and Wade Segrest with 10.

Westbrook Christian improved to 10-9 overall and 3-1 in Class 3A Area 12 with a 65-53 win over Ohatchee on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Leading by two points at halftime, the Warriors outscored the Indians 21 to 10 in the third quarter to take control. Cooper King paced Westbrook with 16 points, followed by Eli Edge with 15, Cooper Greer with 11, Brodie Johnson with eight and Nolan Terrell with six.

Three players scored in double figures as Gadsden City defeated Hazel Green, 56-47, on Jan. 5 at GCHS.
Jakobi Sharp led the Titans (11-9) with 17 points along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. James McFadden finished with 16 points, six rebounds four assists and four steals, while Javien McCants contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Southside defeated Lincoln, 70-55, in Class 5A, Area 12 action on Jan. 5. Cayden Reason paced the Panthers with 18 points, followed by Silas Osborne with 13, Connor Holderfield with 12, Hayes Cosby with nine and Cayden McMichael with eight.

Glencoe defeated Class 3A Area 12 rival Ohatchee, 62-26, on Jan. 5. Aiden Cornett paced the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while Jayden Patton scored 12.

A 26-6 run in the second quarter sparked Westbrook Christian to a 74-52 victory over Faith Christian on Jan. 4 in Rainbow City. For the Warriors (9-9), Eli Edge finished with a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds along with four assists. Cooper King also had a big game with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists. Nolan Terrell added nine points, while Brodie Johnson chipped in nine points and three assists.

Class 5A No. 9 Sardis improved to 16-2 with a 69-34 victory over Susan Moore on Jan. 2.
The Lions led 21-8 after one period, 46-19 at halftime and 57-29 after three quarters. For Sardis, Luke Martin had 14 points, four rebounds and two steals; Eli Morton had 13 points and six
rebounds; Andrew Felter had 10 points three assists and two rebounds; and Kason Moore had nine points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Etowah went 2-1 over the past week.
On Jan. 6, the Blue Devils defeated Cherokee County, 53-43. Jameson Scissum and Jalien Walker each scored 14 points for Etowah, with Walker adding five rebounds and three steals. Lamont Richardson finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Jacob Turner contributed seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
On Jan. 5, Etowah fell to Albertville, 66-50. Walker paced the Blue Devils with 22 points, while Marquan Mahone collected 11 points and four rebounds. Turner chipped in seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
On Jan. 4, Scissum posted a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-55 win over Oneonta. Scissum also had five deflections, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Turner dialed in four 3-point baskets on the way to 18 points, while Richardson scored 17. Walker contributed seven points, seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks.

Ashville fell to Hanceville, 62-54, on Jan. 5. For the Bulldogs, J.B. Potter finished with 15 points and six rebounds; Walker Griffith contributed 10 points. Five rebounds and three steals; Jrey Colley scored nine points; Nate Huckbay added seven points and seven rebounds; and Parker Smith chipped in seven points and four rebounds.
