Chelsea Commings is leaving the Titans for the Tigers.

The Gadsden City High senior signed a soccer scholarship on Wednesday (Apr. 16) with the University of West Alabama in Livingston.

Commings, who has started for the Lady Titan varsity soccer team at striker since her 8th grade year, was excited about the opportunity to play at the next level.

“It’s always been my dream to get a [soccer] scholarship and then go pro, so you have to start small if you want to go big,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to playing in college.”

Commings joins a UWA squad that went 11-8 last season while competing in the Gulf South Conference.

GCHS girls soccer coach Samantha Corker noted that she asked Commings to join the school’s soccer team after watching her run as a 7th grader.

“She had no experience whatsoever, but Chelsea’s really worked hard since she’s been here and has earned what she’s received. She’s very versatile, so they can use her in multiple positions. With her work habits and her speed and her ability as an athlete, I really think she’ll be able to step right in and make a difference [for UWA] right away.”

Coker also praised Commings’ leadership.

“I’ve been here at Gadsden City for seven years, and Chelsea has been the best captain I’ve ever had. As a senior she’s really stepped up and organized things at practice so I don’t have to do it.”

Gadsden City currently is 11-3-3 and is ranked 9th in the latest Alabama High School Soccer Coaches poll. The Lady Titans have clinched the Class 6A, Area 12 title and will host a first round playoff game on Apr. 26.

Commings shared the goal that she and her teammates set prior to this season.

“This year, we’re going to make it all the way through [to the state championship]. We made it to the second round last year, but I think this season we’re a lot better as a team.”
