Scott Clifton is very familiar with Cedar Bluff High’s football team.
To say the least.
The Coosa Christian head coach played and coached his entire career as a Tiger, until this year.
So, will that familiarity help the Conquerors this week in their Class 1A, Region 7 matchup?
“I went and watched them play Gaylesville (in Week 1),” Clifton said. “They’ve changed a lot of their hand signals and they’ve gone to using boards for a lot of play calling. They’ve also put in a few plays we didn’t use last year – like the zone read with the quarterback.
“So, while I’m familiar with them, there are going to be some things that will be different so it won’t be easy to read them.”
Cedar Bluff is an unlikely 0-2 but Clifton said the Tigers are still a team to beat.
“They’re still Cedar Bluff and they’ve still got all of those great athletes,” he said. “They’re learning and growing each week.”
The Conquerors have also been learning each week, but Clifton said that transferring the knowledge from the practice field to the game field has been a problem.
“We’ve got to come out and play as a team and do the little things right,” he said. “So far, we’ve been our own worst enemy. When we get a drive going, it seems like we come up with a penalty or a turnover.”
Last week against Donoho, Ben Mills rushed for 102 yards on 25 carries, while Johnny Grizzard ran five times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Grizzard completed 5-of-13 passes for 38 yards. Randy Washington and Jace Mills each had two catches.
Ben Mills had eight tackles, followed by Jace Mills with five and Seth Williamson with four.
