Downtown walking tours to begin in April

Each April, The Alabama Tourism Department hosts the statewide April Walking Tours, an event that provide tourists an opportunity to learn historical and interesting facts about Alabama towns.

More than 2,000 people participated in the 2023 April Walking Tours, with 23 towns across the state hosting the tours. This year, Gadsden will be a participating city.

Greater Gadsden Area Tourism is offering free walking tours down Broad Street for attendees to learn about Gadsden’s rich history. The hour-long tours start at 10 a.m. each Saturday morning in April. Dates for the 2024 April Walking Tours are April 6, 13, 20 and 27. There is no cost to participate.

Interested patrons should arrive at the back of the Visitors Information Center located in the Downtown Civic Center at 623 Broad Street, Gadsden, by 9:45 a.m. Park and meet at the rear of the building, which is accessible via North 6th Street. The tours will head east down Broad Street promptly at 10 a.m. Participants are asked to dress in casual, weather-appropriate clothing with comfortable shoes. Participants are also asked to bring drinking water. Restroom stops will be available during the walking tour. Tours will continue in a light drizzle but will be cancelled if there is a downpour. Any weather cancellations will be published via Greater Gadsden Area Tourism’s Facebook page by 9 a.m. on the day of the scheduled tour.

The tours are guided by volunteers with connections to the history of Gadsden.Forrest Hinton, from the Gadsden Public Library, will guide the tour on April 6; Michael Rodgers, from the City of Gadsden, on April 13; Pudden McArthur, from A Walk Through Time, on April 20; and Craig Scott, from Gadsden Public Library, on April 27.
