Eagles fly past Ashville, 56-19

Hokes Bluff halted a two-game losing streak with a 56-19 victory over Ashville in Class 4A Region 6 action on Friday, Oct. 25 at AHS.
The Eagles (6-2, 4-2) finished with 575 yards, all on the ground, while holding a 46:03 to 11:0 advantage in time of possession. The Hokes Bluff defense limited Ashville to 2-for-17 on third and fourth down conversion attempts.
Three Hokes Bluff players rushed for over 100 yards. Bryce Whitaker gained 150 yards and two touchdowns on 12 attempts, Blaine Barron caried 15 times for 146 yards and three touchdowns and Brenton Hale ran for 108 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
Alex Carter added 71 yards on seven carries, Rylan Fleming rushed six times for 68 yards and Jace Hanks ran for 68 yards on six totes. Leon Chen went 8-for-8 on extra points.
Allen Cox led the way defensively with seven tackles, followed by Drew McCarver with five and Brodie Brogdon with four. Brogdon and Logan Weimann both had an interception, while Bray Davis had a sack.
The Eagles built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy of touchdowns runs by Alex carter (18 yards), Blaine Barron (three yards) and Bryce Whitaker (28 yards).
J.B. Potter’s 59-yard touchdown pass to Nate Huckbay in the final minute of the opening period drew the Bulldogs (1-7, 0-5) within 15 points, but Hokes Bluff answered with respective touchdown runs from Whitaker (19 yards), Barron (three yards) and Brenton Hale (12 yards) to take a 42-6 lead into halftime.
Barron scored his third touchdown of the night midway through the third quarter to put the game out of reach, while Ryan Fleming ran it in from a yard towards the end of the game.
Potter threw a pair of touchdown passes during the second half, one to Parker Smith for 60 yards and another to Jamon Williams for 67 yards.
Potter was 11 for 19 in passing for 189 yards. He was also the Bulldogs’ leading rusher with 32 yards on nine carries. Williams had five receptions for 94 yards, while Smith caught three passes for 80 yards. Huckbay and Dalton Rice-Thompson each had two catches.
Both teams close out region play on Friday, Oct. 25. Hokes Bluff hosts Oneonta, while Ashville visits Cherokee County.
