Various teams for multiple sports represented Etowah County at recent AHSSA state playoffs. Some teams have continued to the next level of matches.
Boys Soccer
Gadsden City highlighted local action in the AHSAA Boys Soccer Playoffs with a decisive 4-0 win over Athens in Class 6A second-round play Monday night.
Coosa Christian was also in action in the Class 1A-3A bracket, traveling to Weaver for a first-round matchup, while Hokes Bluff dropped a 6-3 decision to White Plains in Class 4A play.
Across the state, several teams advanced with strong performances. In Class 6A, Mountain Brook defeated Pinson Valley 5-0, while Briarwood Christian edged Northridge in a double-overtime shootout. Class 7A action included Auburn’s 4-0 win over Enterprise and Vestavia Hills advancing in a shootout victory over Prattville. Multiple matches across classifications were still unreported at the time of release.
Girls Soccer
Glencoe and Westbrook Christian were both in action during this week’s AHSAA Girls Soccer Playoffs, representing the area across multiple classifications.
Glencoe hosted Childersburg in a Class 1A-3A first-round matchup Tuesday, while Westbrook Christian traveled to Springville for a Class 5A second-round contest.
Across the state, playoff action continued with several teams advancing toward the later rounds. In Class 6A, Mountain Brook moved on with a win over Pell City, though no score was reported. Other notable results included Homewood defeating Gardendale 5-0 and Athens edging Hartselle 1-0. In Class 7A, Auburn rolled past Enterprise 7-0, while Oak Mountain delivered a 13-0 win over Prattville. Earlier-round matchups in Classes 1A-3A and 4A also saw teams such as Whitesburg Christian, Lee-Scott and White Plains advance with decisive victories.
Tennis
Gadsden City and Westbrook Christian were among the schools competing in last week’s AHSAA State Tennis Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center, with both programs appearing in final team standings across their respective classifications.
Gadsden City finished with two points in the Class 6A boys division. Westbrook Christian recorded two points in the Class 1A/3A boys standings and also qualified for the 1A/3A girls tournament.
Mountain Brook swept the Class 6A team titles, with its girls and boys both claiming state championships. The Lady Spartans secured their sixth consecutive 6A title, while the boys captured their third straight crown. In Class 1A/3A, Shoals Christian won the girls championship, and Lauderdale County claimed the boys title.
Baseball
Westbrook Christian and Glencoe represented Etowah County in the opening round of the AHSAA Baseball Playoffs, with both teams advancing out of their respective series.
Westbrook Christian swept Cherokee County in Class 4A, while Glencoe took a two-game series over J.B. Pennington in Class 3A. Elsewhere, Etowah was eliminated by Alexandria in Class 4A, and Sardis dropped its Class 5A series to Russellville. Southside also fell in a three-game Class 6A series against Cullman, and West End was swept by Sumiton Christian in Class 2A play.
Across the state, several higher-seeded teams moved on with strong showings, including Mountain Brook in Class 6A, Oxford and Homewood. A number of series required decisive third games, particularly in Classes 5A and 6A, as teams battled to advance in the double-elimination format’s opening round.
