Southside native and 2012 Gadsden City High graduate Bo Hayes won the Alabama Golf Association’s State Match Play Championship, overcoming an early deficit in the final round last Saturday (Aug. 6) at the 16th Alabama State Match Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association in Brewton.
A rising senior at Jacksonville State University, Hayes defeated Taylor Jones of Birmingham, 2 up in the final match. Jones was 2 up after three holes, but Hayes won three of the next four holes to go 1 up. After a hard-fought back nine, Hayes birdied the last to win his first AGA title.
“It feels great,” said Hayes. “It was a long week, especially with all the rain delays and waiting around. It was a lot of golf in a few days, but it feels so good to get it done.”
Hayes defeated Matt Johnson in the semifinals earlier on Saturday.
Hayes helped the Gamecocks finish third in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference men’s golf championship this past spring. His 69 shot on the first day of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn., was just one off the lowest individual round carded by a JSU golfer all season.
