Last weekend the Woman’s Club of Gadsden hosted the annual Holiday Tour of Homes. The event coincided with two exhibit openings at the Gadsden Museum of Art.

A holiday-themed exhibit called “Yuletide Hues” opened Dec. 6. The exhibit was curated by GMA volunteers and features decorated trees and tabletop displays. The exhibit will run throughout the month of December. This exhibit is being displayed in the second floor gallery.

The second exhibit is called “Alabama’s Finest.” The exhibit features “fabric collages” made by Huntsville mixed media artist Grace Wever. This exhibit will be open until January 19.

Wever’s work has been displayed at the Gadsden Museum of Art several times before, but this is the first time her work will be featured as an exhibit of its own.

“Alabama’s Finest” features 50 of Wever’s pieces, including landscapes and abstracts. Wever said that she draws a lot of inspiration from nature.

“ I continue to be enthralled by the incomparable beauty of the Wet Mountain Valley and that of other western lands,” said Wever. “But…it is only when I link these physical stimuli to the intangibility of the spiritual realm, that my soul permeates and transforms my work.”

Wever’s artistic process differs from most, as she doesn’t start with a layout of the piece.

“I begin with color, thus setting the emotional temperature of the piece; locate candidate fabrics in my stash; and begin a layout,”said Wever.

The final product is a collage of jigsaw puzzle shaped pieces that overlap to form an image.

The Gadsden Museum of Art is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays and First Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum is closed on Sunday and Monday. Admission to the museum is free, but donations are accepted.
