Alabama’s 19th annual sales tax holiday for school-related items is July 19-21. This marks the eighth time the annual tax holiday will take place on the third full weekend of July.
Alabama parents should plan to take advantage of the savings associated with Alabama’s back-to-school sales tax holiday, according to Alabama Retail Association.
While the holiday caters to parents shopping for back-to-school essentials, the tax-free weekend gives everyone a reason to shop.
From 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 19, until midnight, Sunday, July 21, the state waives its four percent sales tax on school-related supplies and clothing. More than 300 cities and counties throughout Alabama also waive their local taxes. In some areas, the savings reach 10 percent.
Altoona, Attalla, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff, Rainbow City, Reece City, Sardis City, Southside, Steele and Walnut Grove are participating in the tax holiday, as is Etowah County. Neighboring Calhoun County, Cherokee County and St. Clair County are also participating, but there are some limitations in St. Clair County and in one municipality in Calhoun County — Oxford. In Oxford, the holiday only applies to Oxford’s regular sales and use tax of four percent and not the one percent sales and use tax levied for education. Similarly in St. Clair County, the holiday only applies to the county’s regular sales and use tax of one percent, not the one percent sales and use tax levied for education.
Tax exempt items include clothing priced at $100 or less per article; school supplies valued at $50 or less per item; books that cost $30 or less per book; and tablets, laptops, computers and printers with a selling price of $750 or less.
