Editor’s Note: The staff of The Messenger believes that the growth and improvement of our society relies on the future thinkers and leaders around us — children. For this reason, The Messenger has created Kids Korner, a weekly opportunity for local children to display their stories and ideas. When a child’s creativity is encouraged, we are gifted a glimpse of what the future might be. If you know of a child who might be interested in submitting stories, email khoskins@gadsdenmessenger.com or call our office at 256-547-1049.

By Charlotte Bailey

Once, there were three best friends named Ella, Molly and Annie.

Since summer was almost over, the three friends decided that they should have a sleepover. Before the sleepover, they decided that each girl should bring one bag of things that they love to do or play with. Ella brought American Girl Dolls with accessories and clothes. Molly brought games like Uno and Candyland. And Annie brought books like the Secret Garden and Matilda.

They decided to have the sleepover outside and sleep in Annie’s big tent. Annie got snacks and their sleepover began. They started by playing some of the games that Molly brought. Once they were done with games, they had a little snack and played with the American Girl Dolls. After that, they went out of the tent and played around outside. They swung on the swings and climbed Annie’s tree. They were having a good time, but before long they got tired, so they went inside to wind down. Before they went to bed, they each read about three chapters of the book that they chose from Annie’s pile. They finished and told scary stories right before they went to bed. Molly blew out the candle that they lit outside of their tent, and they got all quiet.

Outside, there was a rustle.

“Guys,” Annie said. “What was that?”

“I don’t know, it’s not my house,” stammered Ella.

They heard the wind whistle between the trees and more rustling.

“Um, is it just me who’s scared?” asked Molly.

“No,” whispered Annie and Ella.

The girls huddled together as they saw a shadow on one wall of the tent. Annie squeaked in fear. Molly had the courage to slowly open the tent flap. As she was doing so, Annie and Ella creeped up beside her. At first, they didn’t see anything.

“Oh, it was nothing,” said Ella.

Suddenly, a bear jumped out in front of them!

“AHHHH!” The girls screamed!

“Zip the flap back!” yelled Annie.

“I’m going as fast as I can!” replied Molly.

When the tent flap finally closed, the girls huddled together in the center of the tent. Then they heard some chuckling from outside the tent. Ella creeped toward the tent flap and opened it. Ella groaned and the other girls peeked outside and groaned too.

Together, they yelled, “Carl!”

It was just Annie’s brother with a teddy bear.
