Lady Cardinals win Wallace Invitational

The Gadsden State Community College volleyball team kicked of its 2013 season by winning the Wallace State Invitational on Aug. 23-24.

The Lady Cardinals (4-0) came from behind in the finals to defeat St. John’s River (Fla.) Community College, 25-13, 22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-12. 

GSCC opened the tournament with a 25-22, 27-25, 26-24 win over Wallace-Hanceville, followed by a 25-11, 25-17, 25-9 victory over Andrews College.

The Lady Cardinals then beat the host Lady Lions, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18, in the semifinals before defeating St. John’s River in the championship match.

For the tournament, Megan Butler had 94 assists, 44 digs, 22 and seven aces.

Amy Estes had 51 assists, 23 digs and nine aces.

C.J. Payton had 28 kills, 25 digs and five aces.

Tanna Lawson had 38 digs and 11 aces.

Lauren Butler had 51 digs. 

Stora Gilliland had 19 digs and four aces.

Devonna Taylor had 19 kills and four blocks.

Hannah Liverett had 15 kills, followed by Audrianna Hargitt and Katie Mitchell with 12 each, Amanda Young with 10 and Madison Clayton with seven.
