Destiney Butts and Tamia Timmons each scored 17 points to lead West End to a 44-34 Class 2A, Area 12 victory over Gaston in girls high school basketball on Tuesday in Walnut Grove.
The first quarter ended with the score knotted at 8-8 before the Lady Patriots pulled out to a 17-16 lead at the half.
A 14-7 run in the third quarter put the hosts ahead for good at 31-23.
West End head coach Zackery Qualls anticipated a physical game from Gaston.
“I am proud of the way we played tonight, especially limiting our turnovers,” he said. “We did a good job pressuring the ball tonight. Both teams played hard. We’ve been working hard and getting better.”
Yosmen Foster led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.
