Lady Warriors rally for tie

Westbrook Christian came back from a three-goal deficit in the second half to earn a 3-3 tie against Jacksonville in Class 1A-4A action on Tuesday (Feb. 25) in Rainbow City.

After a scoreless first half, the visiting Lady Golden Eagles scored three goals in less than 15 minutes.

Barclay Bellew got the Lady Warriors’ first goal on a well-executed free kick. Mary Grace Mayfield then scored her first varsity goal to bring the hosts within 3-2.

Kylee Berndt finished off the comeback when she headed in her own deflected penalty kick with less than three minutes left to play.

“This was a total team effort,” said first-year Westbrook coach Joel Hawbaker. “We couldn’t be more proud of the girls. Jacksonville is a quality team, and for the girls to not get down and then fight back, very proud of the entire team.”
