Beautiful precision craftsmanship is the best description of Jack Bullock’s work.
Bullock personally creates exceptional wooden wall mosaics in his shop, crafting every detail. Each creation is a labor of love. Even the piece’s eyes are made up of tiny pieces of wood that appear to form one piece. Bullock prefers to use different types of wood to create hues. Certain pieces require painting, such as birds, but most of the work is pure wood colors blended to create a picture.
Bullock is a retired claims adjuster for the Washington, D.C. Transit Authority, where he worked there 26 years. He and his wife now live in Gadsden. Bullock has a trophy room boasting of two bears, a deer and a rather large elk. His beautiful waterfront home displays hand carved wooden furniture made by his own hands.
“When I started, it was for necessity,” said Bullock, a self-taught woodworker. “Back then, if you didn’t have something, you had to make it yourself.”
The wood carving Bullock has been doing for the past 20 years, however, is nothing short of spectacular. Pictures cannot express the intricate details of these works of art.
One major theme of Bullock’s work is wildlife, as he is a man of nature expressed through his creative abilities. His home displays more than 40 pieces of wall mosaics, ranging from a Jack-in-the-Box to a delightfully colored turkey.
Bullock has the ability to create pretty much anything out of wood. His large Jesus on the Cross took a painstaking 120 hours to bring to life. No paint was used; just beautifully blended types of wood to create a magnificent piece.
