Locals players recognized by ASWA

A pair of local student-athletes were recognized in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Week high school football awards.

Sardis’s Toby Pee was nominated for the Offensive Player honors after the senior running back accounted for all four of his team’s touchdowns in a 35-28 loss to Sylvania on Aug. 30. Pee threw an 8-yard halfback pass for a touchdown and rushed 22, 2 and 6 yards for scores. He gained 195 yards on 29 carries and caught three passes for 43 yards.

Gadsden City senior kicker Austin Piazza was nominated for the ASWA Defense/Special Teams award after he booted a 19-yard field goal with 5.5 seconds to go to give the Titans a 30-28 victory over Florence on Aug. 31.

More than 75 players were nominated this week by ASWA members from Birmingham, Boaz, Centre, Cullman Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Gardendale, Gadsden, Jasper, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta and Scottsboro.
