Thanks to a campaign by the senior class of Gadsden City High School and the Student Government Association, the stretch of road from the exit ramp at Interstate 759 to South 11th Street will receive the honorary distinction of “Titan Parkway.”
The Gadsden City Council approved the measure April 16 during Youth in Government Day at city hall.
SGA President Dalton Hopper said the senior class has taken on the project of getting stencils and paint to put lightning bolts along the roadway beside Gadsden City High School, while the city will put signs along the roadway.
Hopper said he’s contacted some members of the local legislative delegation, and State Rep. Craig Ford will be working to get interstate signs designating the roadway as Titan Parkway.
The change is an honorary one, and will not require any changes of business or residential addresses.
Hopper told council members the idea for the project came from last year’s SGA president, who passed it along to him. Hopper said that former president admitted later that he’d never thought the project could become a reality.
The YMCA sponsors youth in Government Day. Each year the project brings a group of GCHS students to spend the day at city hall, shadowing department head and council members, attending the council meeting and conducting their own council meeting as well, so that they can learn about the roles various city leaders play and experience something of the way the city conducts business.
Faculty sponsor Ernestina Cady-Hardrick said 35 students participated in this year’s Youth in Government Day.
