Sardis High capitalized on its home-field advantage to win the  Etowah County Schools softball tournament last Saturday at Carlisle Elementary School.

The Class 4A, No. 5 Lady Lions (28-10-2) defeated a pair of ranked opponents en route to their second tournament championship in three years.

Sardis claimed the first-place trophy by defeating Class 3A, No. 2 Glencoe, 7-1, in the championship game.

Bethany Chamblee earned the victory over the Lady Yellow Jackets.

“Bethany pitched the whole game,” said Sardis head coach Mary Beth Gilliland. “She did a great job, and I am very proud of her and the whole team. We had a good hitting game and a good defensive game. I was very proud of how the girls made Glencoe pay for their defensive mistakes.

“Last year, Glencoe put us out of the tournament . I really think the girls just wanted to win so bad, and they played great. We have a great team all around, and I am very proud of everyone. Everyone contributed some way, and it was a great win,”

Hayley Wofford and Madelyn Gazaway each had two hits for Sardis, while Chamblee, Krista Hubbard, Payton Golden, Kameron Carter, Jadie Fobbus and Kacee Mashburn all had one.

The Lady Lions opened the tournament on Friday (Apr. 19) with a 9-2 quarterfinal win over Gaston, followed by a 7-3 victory over Class 5A, No. 2 Southside in the semifinals.

Gazaway earned the win against Gaston, while Chamblee posted the victory against Southside.

Golden collected five hits in the two wins, followed by Hubbard with four and Gazaway with three.

Carter and Hayley Wofford each hit a home run.

Sardis hosts the Class 4A, Area 12 Tournament next week.
