When it comes to activities to raise awareness about breast cancer, the folks at Advanced Imaging certainly have an attention-getter.

They ask people to decorate a bra for display at the business, and for eventual auction to raise money for “Never Surrender,” a charitable breast cancer support organization that helps to pay for mammograms for women and men who cannot afford them.

Last year, the bra contest brought in about 90 entries, Mary Hager, who directs the charity, said.

The stakes are high with the contest: There’s a $500 individual prize for the best bra and lunch for up to 20 people for the best business entry. Hager said there is no entry fee to participate in the contest.

Organizers do ask that participants donate their bra for an auction after the event is over, Hager said, and that’s where the charity makes money. Last year, she said, the auction came in February, and it garnered about $20,000. And it was a great time for everyone who participated, she said.

Part of the fun, Hager said, comes from the modeling of the bras – done by guys from Absolute Fitness, which co-sponsors the contest. Bras entered in the contest will be displayed at Advanced Imaging, located on Fourth Street in Gadsden.

The deadline for entering a bra in the contest is Oct. 22. For more information, call 256-549-0008 or 256-835-0835. To find out more about getting assistance for a mammogram hrough “Never Surrender,” people need to contact the Family Success Center, Hager said, which handles all referrals to the support organization.
