Sheriff’s Department spreads ‘Christmas Cheer’

By Donna Thornton/News Editor

There seem to have been some elves at the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office during this Christmas season, as the Etowah Sheriff’s Charities embarked on project “Christmas Cheer” to provide gifts for a number of needy families identified through the Etowah County school system.

“We are very happy to be able to provide help to these families and to know that each child will have a smile on their face Christmas morning,” Sheriff Todd Entrekin said in a statement.

“The office adopted 20 kids this year, all from the Etowah County schools,” Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Natalie Barton said. School guidance counselors helped to identify children and submitted applications on their behalf.

Barton said inmates from the county detention center’s female Substance Abuse Prevention Program helped wrap presents and get toys ready for distribution.

Some parents picked up toys for their children and deputies delivered to other families. Barton said the department arranged distribution so that no surprises would be spoiled for Christmas morning.

Etowah Sheriff’s Charities is a non-profit organization created by employees of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.  The organization seeks to strengthen, support, and enhance citizens and organizations in Etowah County by making a positive difference in our community.
