Governor Kay Ivey recently awarded just over $1.1 million dollars in grants to help six municipalities save on operating costs by installing energy efficient lighting and upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The City of Southside is one of the six cities receiving a grant.
Grant recipients will use the funds from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program to replace outdated systems with modern, efficient equipment that is less expensive to operate.
The City of Southside was awarded $58,579 to install LED lighting for multiple municipal facilities. Other governing boards awarded grants were City of Foley, City of Opelika, City of Opp, City of Sylacauga Utilities Board and City of York.
“These upgrades represent a long-term investment that will lower energy costs for years to come, saving money in local budgets that can be put toward other needs,” Ivey said. “I commend the leaders who secured these grants for recognizing the benefits of focus-ing on energy efficiency.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants using funds made available by the U.S. Department of Energy.
“Taking steps to increase efficiency is a sensible and sustainable approach to lowering costs and saving taxpayer money,” said ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in supporting these forward-looking projects.”
