Six students received their diplomas during a small ceremony held at Etowah High School in Attalla on Thursday, August 11. The students received the diplomas though the Helping Inspire, Remediate and Educate or HIRED program.
The HIRED program is for Alabama young adults age 16 through 24. The program can be used by students who have dropped out for whatever reason to receive a diploma. The program can also assist those with a diploma that need help preparing for military or career tests that they need to get them started on a career path.
The best part about the program is that it offers flexible and individualized schedules to accomodate participants that work.
Graduates included Xzavier Taylor, Haley Reeves, Tristan Campbell, Tanner Kirchner, Margarita Tomas and Cecilia Andres.
The six different graduates came from three different school systems and each faced seperate challenges. However, all the students shared determination and dedication to completing the program and receiving their diplomas.
During the graduation ceremony, HIRED Director Kim Perkins shared stories of how much work the students put in to achieve the goals they had set for themselves.
Perkins said that Campbell will be starting at Gadsden State Community College and is currently working in a dentist’s office.
Perkins said that Kirchner drove from Trussville after long work hours for the opportunity, and even took a day off from work to attend the entrance interview.
According to Perkins, Reeves drove from Lincoln and Anniston. On her last day of the program, she jumped, screamed and cried.
Perkins shared that Taylor was offered basketball scholarships, before he was unable to finish the school year. He will be starting at Gadsden State Community College as a basketball player.
According to Perkins, both Tomas and Andres would stay as late as possible to study. Tomas racked up 150 hours of computer time.
“We are super proud of all these guys,” said Perkins.
The six students were awarded with $100 gift cards in addition to their diplomas.
