A pair of players from West End High School made the first team on for the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A All-State softball team.
Senior pitcher/infielder Morgan Cleveland was selected for the utility position, while sophomore Destiney Butts made it as a second baseman.
Two area players garnered honorable mention recognition – Sardis senior Payton Golden at Class 4A second base and West End senior Courtney Oliver at first base.
Cleveland and Butts helped the Lady Patriots win the Class 2A, Area 13 Tournament title and gain a spot in the North Regional Tournament.
Cleveland, who made first team All-State softball for the third straight year, posted a 15-10 record on the mound with 115 strikeouts and a 1.18 earned run average in 143 innings. She finished with 597 career strikeouts. At the plate, Cleveland batted .423 with 26 doubles 42 RBI and five home runs. She signed a volleyball scholarship with Shorter College earlier this year.
Butts, who moved from catcher to second base midway through the season, batted .311 with 29 runs and eight doubles and finished with a fielding percentage of .983.
Oliver posted a .394 batting average with 43 hits, 29 RBI and two home runs. She signed a volleyball scholarship with Snead State earlier this year.
In 43 games, Golden batted .331 with 42 hits, 24 runs and 10 RBI while striking out just five times. She helped the Lady Lions win the Class 4A, Area 15 Tournament championship and gain a spot in the North-Central Regionals. She signed a softball scholarship with Snead State earlier this year.
