Westbrook Christian lost to Walter Wellborn, 49-16, in a Class 3A, Region 6 game on Friday (Oct. 3) in Rainbow City.
“Things didn’t go our way and were outmanned, but we didn’t quit,” said Westbrook head coach Tony Osborne. “At halftime, we said our goal was to win the second half. That’s what we did, and I’m really proud of them.”
Wellborn (4-2, 3-1) didn’t look back after its first score. The Panthers’ first points were set up by a couple of long runs, resulting in a 5-yard Kevin Mixon touchdown run.
The Warriors (2-4, 2-2) first drive resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Chris Underwood.
The possession started with Joseph Shauer’s pass to Underwood, which set up a couple decent runs by Shauer and Dalvin Lewis.
Wellborn answered back with a 1-yard dash into the end zone by Landon Machristie.
After a short Westbrook possession, the Panthers scored again to go up by 21-3.
On the following Warrior series, a fumbled ball was returned for yet another Wellborn score to put the hosts in a 28-3 hole. The visitors finished out the half leading 42-3.
Westbrook made it 42-9 on a 7-yard TD scamper from Shauer.
Shauer completed eight passes 81 yards and ran for 27 yards and a score.
Westbrook continues region play next at Weaver.
