Yellow Jackets clinch playoff berth with win over Ashville

Glencoe clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in Class 3A, Region 5 with a 41-21 victory over Ashville last Friday (Oct. 26). 

The Yellow Jackets (45-4, 4-3) will travel in the first round of the state playoffs on Nov. 9.

Glencoe took a 6-0 lead with 1:11 left in the first quarter on Hunter Nunnally’s nine-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Otwell. 

Nunnally’s TD strike to Jeff Little and Joseph Bright’s extra point with 2:49 left in the first half sent the visitors into the locker room with a 13-0 advantage.

Glencoe went up 20-0 on Nunnally’s 28-yard scoring pass to Austin Hancock at the 8:35 mark of the third frame.

Otwell’s three-yard touchdown run with 4:49 remaining in the period extended the Jacket lead to 27-0.

Following a Bulldog touchdown at 1:08, Glencoe answered with Otwell’s 54-yard TD run with 47 seconds left in the third.

The hosts scored 15 seconds later, but Blake Christian’s 13-yard touchdown off a fumble recovery made it 41-13 at 9:39 of the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs scored another touchdown with 2:30 left remaining in the game.

Nunnally completed 12-of-18 passes for 151 yards. 

Hancock and Otwell each caught four passes, Hancock for 74 yards and Otwell for 44 yards.

Thomas Ozmint led Glencoe in rushing with 116 yards on 21 carries, while Otwell ran seven times for 68 yards. 

Mason Brown had 17 tackles, followed by Pace Ozmint with 10 and Houston Word with eight. Word also had a sack and an interception. 

Glencoe closes out the regular season on Thursday (Nov. 1) with a home game against Etowah.
