Friends of the Southside High School teacher killed earlier this year in a traffic accident have organized a 5K run, “Steps for Stef,” to raise money for a scholarship fund for a Southside High School student.

Stefanie Deru was a graduate of Southside High School. She returned to her alma mater to teach business education.

After her death, a scholarship was established in her name. Billing the May 11 run as the first annual event, organizers intend to make the run a regular spring event.

Registration is $20, made payable to the Stefanie Deru Scholarship Fund. Registration is available on active.com. Mail registration forms and fees to P.O. Box 72, Gadsden, AL 35902.

Runners may register and pick up packets from 12 to 5 p.m. May 10 at Metro Bank in Southside.

Registration May 11 is from 6 to 7:30 a.m. with the run starting at 8 a.m. at the Southside High School Gym. Awards ceremony will be at 10 a.m.
