Local football players recognized

Two area high school football players were nominated for both the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Offensive/Defensive Player of the Week and Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight awards for the week of Oct. 31.

Hokes Bluff senior receiver Phillip Ward caught seven passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 31-29 win over Locust Fork.

Lady Cardinals finish second at ACCC volleyball tournament

Gadsden State fell to Wallace-Hanceville, 25-14, 25-13, 25-15, in the Alabama Community College Conference volleyball tournament championship match on Nov. 2 in Hanceville.

The top-seeded Lady Lions (35-8) advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national tournament in Casper, Wyo., on Nov. 20-22.

Gadsden State (26-16) advanced to the NJCAA District P playoff match on Nov.

Patriots end season on high note with win over Appalachian

Halloween 2014 will long be remembered as the night of the “Thriller” at West End High in Walnut Grove. 

West End came back from a 14-0 deficit against Appalachian to secure a 30-27 victory and its second win of the season.

Gaston ends regular season with fourth straight win

Swane Morris told his Gaston High football team that it didn’t need to “limp into the playoffs.”

Suffice it to say, the Bulldogs are alive and kicking after a 36-14 victory over Pleasant Valley on Thursday.

Pirates sink Sardis

For the third consecutive year, the Boaz-Sardis High football matchup came down to the last minute before it was decided.

On Friday (Oct. 31), Matthew Smith scored on a 6-yard scramble with 41 seconds left to lift Boaz to a 12-7 win over the Lions in Sardis City.
