West End exploded for 50 first half points on the way to a 71-0 demolition of Coosa Christian on Friday in Walnut Grove.
The Patriots (3-2, 0-2) set a record for most points scored in a game.
“This was a good homecoming win for us,” said West End head coach Kyle Davis. “We had great blocking by the offensive line and we got to play a lot of the younger guys.”
Senior quarterback Hunter Grant carried the ball four times during the first half for 128 yards and two touchdowns and he was 2 for 4 passing for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Grant sat out the second half.
West End amassed 527 yards in total offense while holding Coosa (0-5, 0-3) to 120 net yards.
On West End’s second possession of the game, the Patriots drove 24 yards in one play with Grant scoring on a quarterback keeper. Grant ran in the 2-point conversion and West End led 8-0 with 5:52 to go in the first quarter.
The Patriots scored less than two minutes later when Andre Little returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown. Payne Stancil added the PAT for a 15-0 lead.
The Patriots added another score with 2:50 to go in the quarter when Grant tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Little. Hunter Grant added another score on the final play of the first quarter with a 10-yard run. West End held a commanding 29-0 lead after 12 minutes of play.
The second quarter saw West End notch scoring drives of 38, 53 and 43 yards to increase the Patriot lead to 50-0 at intermission.
The second half began much like the first one ended when Caegan Epperson returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and a 57-0 Patriot lead.
The second half was shortened to eight-minute quarters and West End substituted throughout the final two quarters.
The Patriots put together a 54-yard scoring drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Stancil and a 69-yard, 3-play possession finished by with an 8-yard scoring run by Bruce Evans.
West End resumes region play next week at Ider, while Coosa Christian hosts Decatur Heritage in non-region action.
