Glencoe and Hokes Bluff dueled to a draw in four quarters before the Lady Jackets outpaced the Lady Eagles in overtime, 67-62, in Class 3A, Region 10 play last Friday, Dec. 2 at Hokes Bluff.

Glencoe’s Laura Poovey led all scorers with 27 points, nine of which came during the four minute overtime period to pace the Jackets in the win. Poovey also added four assists.

“I thought we played great tonight,” Glencoe head coach John Blackwell said. “Laura [Poovey] played as well as she has played all year and really carried us, especially late in the game and overtime.”

Glencoe took a 39-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Poovey was too much for the Lady Eagles, scoring seven of Glencoe’s 10 points in the final minutes to send the game into overtime tied at 57.

The Lady Eagles made 16-of-19 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Mattie Bryant’s basket with two seconds left extended the Lady Eagles’ lead to 11-8 at the end of the opening quarter.

The second frame ended with a buzzer-beating 3-point shot by Hannah Evans to give the Lady Eagles a 28-24 lead at the break.

Hokes Bluff tacked on to its lead early in the third period, but Glencoe’s Sarah Wallace tied the game with a basket at 2:49 mark. Kelsey Cooper complimented Wallace with a basket 37 seconds later to give Glencoe the lead. Glencoe dominated the quarter, outscoring Hokes Bluff 15-5.

Both teams spent plenty of time on the free throw line. The Lady Jackets made 58 percent of their foul shots (20 of 34). The Lady Eagles netted 23-of-36 for 63 percent.

Glencoe was led by Poovey’s 27 points. Sarah Wallace followed with 12 points. Kelsey Cooper added 10 points and four assists. Jordan Sims notched 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hokes Bluff’s leading scorer was Savannah Ward with 20 points. Summer Wilson added 13.

“Savannah [Ward] always plays well and we depend on her a lot,” Hokes Bluff head coach Jason Shields said. “The third quarter hurt us. We are young and do not have much depth. Glencoe is tough, but we have proven we can compete with them.”
