Class 7A, No. 10 James Clemens outlasted Gadsden City, 21-14, in a key Region 4 game last Friday (Sept. 9) in Madison.
The Jets (1-2, 1-1) got the edge with their running attack and defense. The score was tied 7-7 at halftime and 14-14 after three quarters. Bradley Belt’s 5-yard touchdown run that capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with 4:28 left was the difference.
James Clemens defensive end LaBryan Ray He scored a 7-yard touchdown by blocking a punt in the third quarter. Belt finished with 33 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
Kyriq McDonald had a 52-yard punt return to set up Belt’s first touchdown in the second quarter.
The Titans (0-4, 0-2) scored on DeWayne Parker’s 74-yard blocked field goal return in the second quarter and Ryan Sparks’ 34-yard pass to Jamontavius Woods.
Gadsden City’s Damon Williams had 19 carries for 57 yards.
The Titans had turnovers, including two interceptions and one fumble.
The Jet had 231 total yards, 223 coming via the rush, while Gadsden City managed 106.
“It was a hard-fought game on both sides and a physical game,” said Gadsden City coach Matt Scott. “We knew it would be. In those types of games, typically it’s the team that has the fewest turnovers and makes the fewest mistakes. At the end of the day, we probably made a few too many mistakes to overcome. But our kids played hard and we’re going to keep pushing forward. Hopefully we’ll see some of these teams in the playoffs.”
Gadsden City visits region rival Grissom on Thursday (Sept. 15) in Huntsville.
