Sardis High opened the season with a fireworks show last Friday, scoring 41 points against Sylvania.
With that explosion, coach Gene Hill found a few answers.
“Keenan (Lewis) and Jesse (Hubbard) combined for over 250 rushing yards,” Hill said. “I was worried about receivers but we found out that a few of them can play.”
Lewis ran for 149 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown, while Hubbard, rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Hubbard also caught a touchdown pass.
Hill said that Brett Rains, who caught a 50-yard touchdown pass, really stood out.
“We’ve been looking for a guy who can stretch the defense and make plays downfield,” Hill said. “We think we found that in Brett.”
The Lions defense played well in spurts, according to Hill. Sylvania opened with the ball and went three-and-out, creating a short field which Sardis took advantage of.
By the end of the half, the Lions enjoyed a 34-9 edge.
“We challenged the defense at halftime and for the most part, they responded,” Hill said. “We substituted in the fourth quarter but still had decent numbers.”
Will Scott passed for three touchdowns, completing 5-of-10 passes for 103 yards.
