Auburn Week 10 Review

Sunny Golloway’s first season as Auburn’s manager ended in disappointing fashion. The Tigers were swept and dominated by LSU and missed the SEC Tournament. Auburn finished the year last in the SEC West Division with a record of 28-28 overall and 10-20 in league play.

Alabama Week 10 Review

The Crimson Tide once led the SEC West but finished fifth after a tough stretch to end the year. In its last series of the year, Alabama lost two of three games to Mississippi State. In the first game of the SEC Tournament, Alabama was eliminated after a 7-1 loss to Kentucky. The Crimson Tide finished the regular season 34-22 overall and 15-14 in conference play. Alabama likely will make the NCAA Tournament as either a No. 2 or 3 seed.

SEC Tournament

Twelve teams made the SEC Tournament, and the favorite to win it all lost its opening game. Florida, who won the SEC East by three games, lost to Kentucky, 4-2. SEC West champion Ole Miss lost its first game to Arkansas, 2-1. On the opening day of the tournament, Vanderbilt knocked off Tennessee, 3-2, likely ending the Volunteers’ season in the process. Arkansas defeated Texas A&M, 4-2. Kentucky cruised past Alabama, 7-1. Mississippi State slid past Georgia, 5-4.

On the second day of the tournament, Mississippi State dominated South Carolina, 12-0, while LSU easily defeated Vanderbilt, 11-1. Division champions Ole Miss and Florida are already facing elimination, although these tournament losses likely will not affect their seeding for the NCAA Tournament.

LSU and Mississippi State have played exceptionally well in recent years towards the end of the season, and both teams have continued that trend in the last few weeks. Arkansas and Kentucky also played well recently. The SEC likely will send at least eight teams to the NCAA Tournament, and possibly as many as 11. As many as five SEC teams will host an NCAA Regional Tournament, including Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and possibly LSU. The Gators, Rebels, Gamecocks, and Commodores also are vying for chance to host a Super Regional. The SEC could be the first conference to ever send more than nine teams to the NCAA Tournament.
