As school days were drawing to a close this year, Iva Lee Elementary School students worked with the Alabama Wildlife Federation to build an outdoor classroom at the school.
The outdoor classroom features a sensory garden, with plants to appeal to the senses, herb gardens, flower gardens, a butterfly garden and other features.
Most of the money for the project was raised by the schools Junior Beta Club members.
Many merchants gave the school staff and volunteers a discount on materials for the garden.
Much of the work on the garden, which included digging a path and installing rock walkways was done during a single work day at the elementary school.
Beta Club sponsor Heather Ford said Iva Lee’s teachers will be able to use the new outdoor classrooms for lessons in many different subjects when they return to school in the fall.
