Lions looking to ram past Sylvania

Sardis (0-0) at Sylvania (0-0)

Last meeting: 2013 – Sardis 41, Sylvania 22

Series record: Sylvania 12, Sardis 10

By Gene Stanley/Sports Correspondent

Sardis High’s young football team opens the season on the road against a typical Sylvania team, one that loves to win with a strong running game and a stout defense.

The only difference this year is that the Rams have a tall, lanky quarterback and are prone to throw the ball a bit.

“They’re well-coached and play hard,” Sardis coach Gene Hill said. “The only thing is that their numbers are down a little bit. They dressed 30-something kids (for their jamboree).

As for the Lions, Hill was glad to be able to get some jitters out of the way in their jamboree last Friday. Sardis normally has only three seniors on the field.

“We definitely had some jitters,” he said. “But we stopped the run well and tackled. Those were areas I was concerned with. We gave up some big plays in the secondary, which we have to correct. But our run game was better than I expected.

“I hope we’re a lot better this week.”
