In July, children served by The James M. Barrie Center for Children had a special opportunity to attend Summer Art Camp at the Gadsden Museum of Art.
The camp, made possible through a collaboration between the two organizations, provided children with an opportunity to explore their creativity in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday,” gave campers the opportunity to explore American history and symbols through art. Throughout the camp, children created artwork featuring the American flag, an eagle, a copper penny, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell.
For children who have experienced trauma, opportunities for creative expression can be especially meaningful.
“Art is much more than a creative activity,” Patricia Falcon, executive director of the Barrie Center, said. “It can be a powerful, trauma-informed tool that gives children another way to express emotions, process difficult experiences and communicate feelings that may be hard to put into words.”
The art camp offered children the chance to try something new, build confidence, experience joy and create something they could be proud of, all while continuing their journey toward hope and healing.
The Barrie Center extends its heartfelt appreciation to Ray Wetzel, Executive Director of the Gadsden Museum of Art, and the dedicated volunteers and staff who generously shared their time, talents and resources to make this special experience possible. Their kindness and commitment helped create a welcoming space where children could express themselves, connect with others and make positive memories.
“Partnerships like this with the Gadsden Museum of Art allow our community to become part of the healing process by creating experiences where children can simply be children, creating, laughing, learning and discovering what they can accomplish,” Falcon said.
Collaborations like this demonstrate what is possible when community organizations come together on behalf of children. For the Barrie Center, healing does not happen through one service or one organization alone. It happens when a community chooses to surround children with opportunities to feel safe, supported, valued and hopeful about their future.
