Gadsden’s 4th Street Chick-fil-A will host their 2nd annual 5K, 10K and 1-mile Fun Run on Sept 6.
The 10k and 5k races will begin at 8 a.m. in the Coosa Valley YMCA parking lot. The 1-mile Fun Run will begin at 9:30 a.m. There will also be a Family Fun Zone with free activities and inflatables for children under 12 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The registration fee for the 5k and the 1-mile Fun Run is $25. For the 10k, the fee is $30. For groups of four or more, they can get a 10 percent discount on their total registration.
The proceeds of the race fundraiser will go to Never Surrender, a local charity.
Never Surrender is a non-profit charity that promotes the early detection of breast cancer. One way the program accomplish es this is by providing a free voucher for a mammogram to people who may not have the financial resources to get one. Another way is to go to high schools and teach the girls how to perform self-breast exams, which can help detect unusual lumps and bumps and catch breast cancer early.
Never Surrender also educates and supports those affected by breast cancer. Some of this includes giving advice on preparing to undergo procedures.
Never Surrender provides financial support when needed. The charity has helped people battling breast cancer by paying utilities and groceries.
Chik-fil-A’s 10K, 5K and 1-mile Fun Run is one of Never Surrender’s more profitable fundraisers. Last year, the race raised $6750.
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer to affect women, with one in eight women developing the disease. Although most diagnoses are women, it is important to note that breast cancer can also affect men.
Never Surrender offers tips to catch breast cancer early, when it is at its most treatable. These include monthly self-breast exams, an annual clinical breast exam at your doctor, and a yearly mammogram after the age of 40.
Mary Hagar founded Never Surrender. She found limited resources for assistance when fighting her own battle with breast cancer, so she decided to help others fighting the disease.
“My favorite part is seeing the happy runners crossing the finish line and that it’s going to benefit a good cause,” said Carol Zaharias, franchise operator of Chick-fil-A.
The 5k and 10k courses are certified and ChronoTrack chip timing is available.
Participants will receive a Dri-Fit shirt and Chick-fil-A food at the finish line. Chances to win Chick-fil-A food for a year will also be available.
