Deadline for Dragon Boat Festival is Aug. 1

Dragon Boats will invade the Coosa River Aug. 17 to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. The deadline for teams to register is Aug. 1.

 Deadline for Dragon Boat Festival is Aug. 1

The Habitat for Humanity Dragon Boat Festival returns to Gadsden Aug. 17 at Gadsden Riverwalk Park. The deadline to register teams is Aug. 1. Each team will consist of 20 paddlers, one drummer and a steersperson, plus three alternates. All must be 15 years of age or older. The teams will race 46-foot-long canoes on the Coosa, in timed heats.

Each team will receive a 90-minute practice session with a coach; tent space in the Athletes Village; team name and sponsor recognition; and the use of all equipment, including the boat, paddles, life jackets, and steersman. Professional team photos will be available.

Awards given will be: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Best Team Spirit, Best Dresser Drummer, Best Decorated Tent.

Starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 17, there will be oncessions, market vendors, kid’s activities, ski demo, JSU Steel Drum Band at the Riverwalk, to make the Dragon Boat Festival a fun event for spectators as well as competitors.
