Etowah’s Thomas wins gold at state track meet

Etowah High senior Lamar Thomas took home a pair of medals at the Class 5A state track & field meet on May 2-3 in Gulf Shores. 

Thomas won the first place gold medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.05 seconds and captured the third-place bronze in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.13 seconds. 

Thomas’ gold medal is believed to be the first for Etowah since at least 1999. 

Winning the second-place silver for the Blue Devils was the 400-meter relay team of Thomas, DeTavise Glover, Trey Parker and Tevin Peterson with a time of 42.95 seconds. 

Etowah finished ninth overall at the state meet with 29 points.

Other local medalists were Sardis’ Selena Tarvin, who took the silver in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.51 seconds; the Gaston High 400-meter relay team of Shai Ogles, Albert Douglas, Josh Bogle and Mitchell Smith, which won sliver in the 400-meter with a time of 44.45; and Glencoe’s Jensan Napper, who took Class 3A bronze in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.41. Tarvin also placed seventh in both the long jump and triple jump.

Area athletes earning points were Gaston’s Jacob Johnson (fourth in the 2A boys 1600-meter run, fifth in the 3200-mter run, eighth in the 800-mter run); Hokes Bluff’s Tylynn Register (fourth in the 4A girls 300-meter hurdles, fifth in the long jump, eighth in the triple jump); Gadsden City’s Tansley LaCounty (fifth in the 6A girls triple jump, eighth in the long jump); Gaston’s Jason Bogle (fifth in the 1A boys javelin, sixth in the triple jump); Southside’s Hunter Nails (eighth in the 5A boys 800-meter run); Gadsden City’s Christopher Clements (seventh in the 6A boys 1600-meter run); the seventh-place Gadsden City boys 400-meter relay team; Gadsden City’s D.D. Underwood (eighth in the 6A boys high jump); and Gadsden City’s Damon Williams (eight in the 6A boys long jump). 

The Gaston boys finished seventh in 2A, the Sardis girls 13th in the 4A, the Hokes Bluff girls 14th in 4A and the Glencoe girls 19th in 3A.
