A pair of local high school volleyball teams competed in the Class 3A Area 12 Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 16, with one making the playoffs and the other seeing its season end.
Glencoe finished as the tournament runner-up as the host school. The Lady Yellow Jackets (34-18) defeated Piedmont 23-25, 25-8, 25-15, 21-25, 15-13 to advance to the championship match against Ohatchee, where Glencoe fell to the Lady Indians by a score of 16-25, 15-25, 25-15, 27-29. Both teams advance to Class 3A Super Regional Tournament in Hoover starting Thursday, Oct. 24. Glencnoe will face Geraldine at 12:15 p.m. at the Finley Center in Hoover.
Against Ohatchee in the semifinals, Westbrook Christian fell behind 2-0 with losses of 14-25 and 23-25, but the Lady Warriors rallied with wins of 25-21 and 25-14. But Ohatchee prevailed in the deciding fifth set with a 15-11 victory, ending Westbrook’s season at 39-6.
For the tournament for Glencoe, Alli Jo Amos had 18 digs, 17 kills and seven blocks; Avery Barkley had 35 assists, 23 digs and three aces; Kaelyn Hollis had 50 digs; Evelyn Nowak had 33 kills and five digs; Kinlee Montgomery had 47 assists, 18 digs and three kills; Mia talbot had 23 kills; Payton Gray had 24 digs, five aces and four assists; Gracyn Bunt had 12 digs and two aces; Millie Chambless had 13 kills, two digs and two blocks; Ashyln Stone had 11 digs and four kills; and Sadie Waldrop had five digs.
For Westbrook, Raylee Neal had 36 assists, 19 digs, four aces and three kills; Marley Cox had 18 kills, 15 digs and two aces; Kylee Wyatt had 18 digs and three aces; Landri Lipscomb had 11 kills and three digs; Ellison Stewart had 12 digs, 10 kills and two aces; Sara Windle had 12 digs and two aces; and Addi Hammontree had five kills and five digs.
Making the All-Tournament were Alli Jo Amos, Evelyn Nowak and Mia Talbot from Glencoe; Kylie Wyatt and Marley Cox from Westbrook; Alanah Fitch, Savannah Reaves, Emily Riddle and Rebecca Henderson from Ohatchee; and Cacey Brothers and Cayla Brothers from Piedmont. Rebecca Henderson was named Tournament MVP.
