There’s a lot of speed coming to Glencoe High this week, specifically in the form of Walter Wellborn’s football team.

“They’re one of the fastest teams we’ll see this year,” Yellow Jackets coach Lee Ozmint said. “They’ve got an All-State quarterback and linebacker. They’ve got a great wide receiver and one of the best running backs we’ll see this year.”

The Panthers come in after a loss to Class 4A No. 4 Saks.

“They got beat by Saks, but a lot of teams are going to get beat by Saks this year,” Ozmint said. “If we go in thinking we can just roll up and beat them, we’ll be beat. We’ve got to be prepared for one of the best teams in the state.”

Glencoe is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A this week, while Wellborn is right behind at No. 8.

The Yellow Jackets showed some heart against Plainview. The Yellow Jackets were down 14-0 on the road and scored with 1:30 left in the first half before taking control in the second half.

“I was pleased with our conditioning,” Ozmint said. “But I wasn’t pleased with our execution. Our tackling early was bad but we tackled better as the game went on. We tried to do too much – we played like it was Game 1 of the season.”

Expect a hard-fought game when these teams collide.

“I’m sure they’ve had this date circled on their calendar for awhile,” Ozmint said. “I know we have.”

Last week against Plainview, Thomas Ozmint rushed for 166 yards on 20 carries. He also caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Dylan Stone completed 10-of-20 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrew Lang had three receptions for 29 yards and a score.

Mason Brown had 11 tackles, followed by Chance Duncan with nine and Dalton Roberts with eight.

Jacob Bradley and Will Parker each had an interception.
