Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates (AAHA) celebrated its 22nd anniversary at their Annual Awards Banquet in Montgomery Feb. 20. Gov. Robert Bentley was the keynote speaker at the event.
Affiliate leadership and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity affiliates around the state gathered to celebrate nine Volunteer of the Year award recipients, a Green Build Award winner and Habitat for Humanity Leader of the Year.
Habitat for Humanity International is ranked in the top 10 house builders in the nation and Alabama is ranked 6th in the 50 states in production. Alabama Habitat for Humanity affiliates have completed 22 years of service in Alabama helping over 2500 needy families.
Gadsden-Etowah Habitat for Humanity’s Volunteer of the Year 2013, John Parks, was recognized by Gov. Bentley.
John has been a volunteer with the local affiliate for over 10 years. He serves in several roles, but is best known at “the best saw man” you could find, says Steve Scharfenberg, Construction Coordinator for G-E HFH.
“John is fast, accurate, and very cheerful. He has earned the love and respect of all our volunteers,” Steve said.
John Parks contributions over the years include donations of supplies, heavy duty scaffolding, construction of a jig, and donation of tools, namely a jig saw and table saw.
“John’s outgoing and friendly personality has earned the nickname of “Papa Smurf”,” said Suzanne Scharfenberg, Pres. Board of Directors. John also volunteers with Manna, Carpenters for Christ and RSVP.
“I’m very proud of the work of our more than 1,500 affiliates in the U.S.,” said Jonathan Reckford, Habitat for Humanity International CEO.
“The fact that they are continuing to build and rehab homes in these difficult economic times is a testament to their resourcefulness and their commitment to families, affordable housing and the communities they serve.
“We are grateful to our donors and volunteers whose generosity makes this work possible.”
